In the summer of 2012, I worked with world renowned American ceramics artist Michelle Erickson who participated in the V&A Ceramics Residency Programme over three months.

Michelle’s creative practice explores lost ceramic techniques, and she is inspired by World trade, historic and contemporary objects and indigenous clays.  For her residency, Erickson curated a display that featured Nike training shoes worn by athletes competing at the London 2012 Olympics, historic London made ceramics, Staffordshire pottery and objects featuring social drinking activities alongside her own work.

Michelle’s work during her residency explored London’s indigenous clays, traditional UK making techniques, and world events taking place, namely the London Olympics that took place that summer.

Michelle and I also worked on three short films that documented her work, while interpreting objects in the V&A ceramic collections.
